Byrne Dentistry

Dr Dan Byrne

Dental practitioners cannot reliably predict implications if they don’t have a working knowledge of the total masticatory system, which includes the interrelationships of the teeth, the temporomandibular joints, the muscles and supporting tissues including the airway.  An imbalance or disharmony in any one of these areas can lead to masticatory system dysfunction often called temporomandibular joint dysfunction, Costen syndrome, TMD or TMJ.  Commonly unnoticed by the asymptomatic patient, a slight imbalance can be diagnosed and corrected by an astute dentist often preventing many dental maladies such as worn, cracked or broken teeth.  At other times such imbalances can be a source of symptomatic tooth, joint, or facial pain.  Specifically trained dental practitioners can often predictably create a balanced masticatory system which is stable, comfortable and long lasting.

These principles apply to both children and adults.  Dr. Byrne is passionate about these interrelationships involving such assessments in each pediatric and adult dental exam.  A complete examination does not rely solely on symptoms because signs almost always precede symptoms.

Research demonstrates many potential links: gum disease to heart disease; snoring/sleep apnea to hypertension, cardiovascular disease and excessive day-time sleepiness; bite imbalances to headaches, cavities, cracked, broken or worn teeth; early age thumb/appendage sucking and airway irregularities to mal-occlusion, TMJ disorientation, snoring and dentofacial deformities.

Dr. Byrne’s commitment to Dentistry led him to train at The Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education and The Piper Clinic for TMJ diagnosis and treatment as well as studies involving Cosmetic, Implant, and Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Sleep Medicine.  For the past 16 years, he practiced in Pierce county and has been voted one of the Top 100 Dentists in Washington.  Combining Dr. Byrne’s dental expertise and research studies showing over 85% of the population having a clinical sign of TMD, 50% subclinical, and over 25% undiagnosed Sleep Apnea or Snoring, he will create a balanced approach specific to your needs.
